Mission

Black Rock Observatory inspires cosmic wonder and science literacy by bringing astronomy to art festivals, expanding minds, and connecting humanity with the universe.

At Black Rock Observatory, we believe everyone deserves to experience the awe and humility inspired by the cosmos. Since 2014, we have brought telescopes and immersive astronomy outreach to art festivals and unconventional settings, inviting participants to witness firsthand the stunning reality of planets, stars, and galaxies. These encounters are transformative: sparking wonder, inspiring scientific curiosity, and broadening perspectives.

We see ourselves as ambassadors—a “tourist office for the rest of the universe”—guiding people toward powerful moments of realization about our place in the cosmos. By bridging science and art, we aim not only to reveal the extraordinary beauty and scale of space but to ignite deeper reflections about humanity’s future beyond Earth. From Black Rock City to Mars and beyond, we advocate for curiosity, humility, and thoughtful exploration of the universe.

Ultimately, our mission is not just to amaze but to inspire participants to carry the light of cosmic understanding back into their communities, nurturing scientific literacy and contemplation well beyond the festival gates.
