Why build a new observatory dome?
For more than a decade, the dome has been the heart of Black Rock Observatory. It has travelled with us to ten Burning Mans and countless regional events. It has sheltered telescopes, meteorites, and thousands of curious minds under its wooden arcs.
The original dome has served us well, but after years of desert dust, cross-country builds, and plenty of patchwork repairs, it is ready for retirement. What began as a sturdy, reliable, and beautiful piece of art now needs a full refresh.
A new dome will carry our mission into the next decade. It will give us a stronger foundation to welcome the community, protect our instruments, and continue opening eyes to the wonders of the universe.
Design
The new dome will be designed and built by legendary architect Gregg Fleischmann. Gregg’s wooden structures have defined the landscape of Burning Man for decades, including the unforgettable Temple of Whollyness in 2013. He also created the original Black Rock Observatory dome, so we know firsthand the strength, beauty, and ingenuity of his designs.
Twelve years later, we’re ready to take it further. The next-generation dome will be constructed entirely of wood, with no metal, using Gregg’s signature joinery techniques. It will feature improved durability, smarter construction elements, and thoughtful new features to make the observatory more welcoming and inspiring. Working directly with Gregg, we’ll build on the legacy of the first dome while creating something truly timeless.
How your donation will be used
Your donation directly fuels the creation of our new observatory dome. Built entirely of wood with Gregg Fleischmann’s signature design, this dome will stand for the next decade as a home for astronomy at Burning Man.
Most of the cost goes toward materials and transport, while our team of volunteers provides the labor. Here is how your contribution helps:
- Wood and materials for the dome’s structure
- Transportation to bring everything safely to the playa
- Design support to refine and adapt Gregg’s plans
- Future mission work if funds remain, supporting our telescopes, meteorites, and outreach
Black Rock Observatory is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, so every donation is tax-deductible. Together, we can build a gathering place that inspires wonder, curiosity, and connection under the desert sky.
